After wasting fairly expensive food on squirrels that found every possible way to defeat my cheaper previous birdfeeders, I bit the bullet and bought this one. Watching the squirrels try for weeks to get at the seed made it worth its weight in gold for entertainment value. Even if a couple of overweight and boisterious jays landed on it, it would slam shut and they'd fly away, making room for all the finches and chickadees I wanted to feed. But I started noticing ominous signs.
One morning, I found it halfway across the yard, but unopened. So I secured it to the pole better.
A week later, the pole it hung from was badly damaged; the thick metal was bent down and the deck wood it was mounted to was splintered. But it was still full of bird seed.
Then, last week, I woke up to find three bears on my deck in the middle of the night having some sort of strategy meeting on how to open it. I took it down, not wanting my deck to become the Ursine Property Destruction Research Center.
But I didn't hide it well - they found it beneath the deck, tore open the tupperware container it was in, and managed to open the top without damaging it. I know this because I found the top a day later deep in the woods.
Long story short - great for birds, but bears win.

I have tried many so-called squirrel-proof bird feeders that don't work. This one does, and it is easy to load with seed and use. The birds love it. I recommend this product.

This feeder works as described. The larger version with the "ring" around the base is great as well. The larger version cuts off the squirrels by pulling a sleeve downward over the seed access points. Blocking the access "doors" entirely precludes squirrels from bouncing the feeder and shaking free the seed. On THIS version, the classic, the deterring factor is a small mesh which is pulled down over the access doors instead of totally blocking them. A determined squirrel COULD bounce the heck out of this feeder and empty the seed to the ground below, whereas on the Plus model with cardinal rig, they CANNOT bounce it empty. However, If you read the instructions, there are clear guidelines for mounting the feeders. To properly hang the feeders, you cannot simply hang it directly from a hook: there must be an extension of some sort between the hook and the top of the feeder so as to increase the length "beyond squirrel-body length overall". Otherwise the squirrel hangs upside down, reaches inside the ports on either model and eats away. If you increase the length of the hanging section to 16 inches, as detailed in the instructions, the squirrel is too short to reach down the side and MUST climb onto the side which triggers the external mesh or sleeve to slide downward and deny access to the seed.
So, use a hangar extension between the feeder cable and the hook. For sale are Branch Hooks, Extension Hooks by the same company (Brome)
Secondly, don't hang this thing where Mr. Squirrel climbs the tree or pole and simply reaches across. You must ensure the horizontal distance between the pole and the feeder exceeds "arms length" for a squirrel, causing Mr. Squirrel to jump onto the feeder, and weight triggering the deterrent mesh device.
The instructions recommend 16 inches between the top of the feeder cone to the hook and 16 inches between the horizontal separation to any adjacent vertical surfaces.
I have now purchased a 2nd feeder of this style, own the "Squirrel Buster Plus" and the Squirrel Buster Finch feeder (4 total) and given how much money I have wasted on other feeders, hooks, baffles etc, these do the trick. Of course NOTHING is totally fool proof. These cannot preclude raccoons from knocking them down etc so please be reasonable in your expectations.
I have also sent this model and the Finch model to both sets of parents for the holidays.
Also, all feeders can be "taken apart" and cleaned in the dishwasher. There are individual replacement parts for the feeders which enable you to fix them instead of tossing them and buying a new one. The warranty requires return of the warranty card in the box.
The perches are metal. the packaging information clarifies that birds feet cannot "stick" to cold metal perches. I guess that urban rumor is still running around. Birds "do not have sweat glands in their feet". Interesting.
The perch lengths are adjustable on the Plus model which lets you shorten to preclude "hog" birds etc. You can also adjust how much weight triggers the mechanism on the PLUS model. You CANNOT adjust the weight tension on the Classic model. It is a fixed weight trigger.
